How do we Treat Fractures?

Broken bones can be easily treated these days, either with plaster, or without plaster when the break is clean. In hairline fracture, even simple immobilization without plaster (using elastocrepe bandages) may be sufficient to bring about healing. When plastered normal fractures in case of long bones take about 4-6 weeks to heal. When the break is not clean, or the bone is broken into small pieces – to stabilize the broken bone nails, screws bolts or plates may have to be used to keep them in place after they are aligned ( put in place). This is a surgical procedure. If the bones do not join properly, these devices may even have to be left permanently inside. In cases where healing process is good, the implanted metal fixture or prosthesis is removed after some time by a repeat surgery. In some cases is can be removed without surgical intervention. The ends are left out so that the nail can be pulled out without cutting open the affected area again, or by giving a very small incision.

How are Fractures of the Trunk Treated?
For any fracture of bones in the trunk ( spine, ribs) plaster cannot be applied since it interferes with breathing. In such cases, localized strapping, painkillers and rest are the main line of treatment, which help reduce mobility and promote healing.
